Get to know YOU giveaway! (NOW CLOSED)

Well, I finally got with the program and started a Facebook page for THE KATY. I promised that once I received 100 likes I’d have a giveaway and you did it in ONE DAY. I’m amazed! Since I’m still getting my stuff together on my end as I figure out the Facebook page, I decided I want to get to know you all a little bit during this giveaway. I’ll go first!

Book genre: That’s tough. I love reading all sorts of fiction. I love non-fiction too, but usually end up finding more and more non-fiction to read… Recently I’ve found a love for the Dystopian genre after joining the Band of Dystopian Authors and Fans group on Facebook. If you like this genre, definitely check them out. Such a great bunch of people. I also enjoy paranormal, fantasy, science fiction, romance (it depends), and I will try anything really.

Favorite Geek Fandom: I have to say Star Wars. It’s been in my blood since 1st grade (the boys I had a crush on loved it, but I’ll say my love for Star Wars definitely outlasted my crush for that boy!) and I married a man named Luke WALKER. Destiny? Definitely.

Other fandoms I enjoy: Various Anime, Supernatural, Firefly, OITNB, How to Train Your Dragon, Bob’s Burgers, Zombies (does that count?), Jurassic Park, and again, I will try (pretty much) anything!

If you want to hear more tidbits about me, check out the posts from the A-Z Blogging Challenge in April this year. I talk about kids, geek, books, and more!

Any questions? Anything you want to see? Comment below!

Without further ado, The giveaway! I hope to see you on the Facebook page. 🙂 (This giveaway is now closed! Congrats to the winner who has been contacted via email. Look forward to more giveaways as my blog grows. This was FUN!)

Saw Jurassic World Premiere…must write! (NO SPOILERS, DON’T WORRY)

Wow. Just wow. When I began seeing posts about how CGI is ruining movies and such, I was a little worried about seeing Jurassic World. Would it live up to the first one? Would the storyline be epic or just a bunch of explosions and CGI effects? Then I took a step back from those opinions and smiled. When I go to movie, I just go to enjoy them and that’s what Luke and I did. We went to the premiere for Jurassic World at a theater near us last night and sat down. And enjoyed it. Actually, that’s an understatement. Jurassic World blew our socks off!

1. Effects. I thought the CGI was amazing. We didn’t see it in IMAX 3D (yet) or anything, but I definitely think they did a great job creating a realistic effect to the dinosaurs. We did see the movie in High def 4K (I assume that’s good, I know nothing about screens). Of course, it would’ve been really cool to see them use some animatronics. That worked for the first movie, so imagine what that could’ve looked like NOW so many years later!

2. Acting. I saw a post complaining about the lack of women in Jurassic World. While the person they are talking about in the article is definitely dumb for saying that Jurassic World passes the Bechdel test because “the raptors are female”, women still get some kick ass parts in the new movie.

The kids were not annoying. Definitely a PLUS over the first movie. The kids in Jurassic Park are so annoying, I almost want them to get eaten by dinosaurs (harsh…sorry). The kids in Jurassic World are easier to connect to (in my opinion. Maybe they will annoy you? But I liked them!).

3. Chris Pratt. Need I say more? Sigh.

Conclusion: Go see it. It was amazing! Luke and I are already trying to find time to get to the IMAX to see Jurassic World in 3D.

THE KATY’s Facebook adventure begins

The title is right. I have started a Facebook group for this blog. I’m pretty sure it’ll be like a huge book-geek-fx makeup-writing-whatever-loving group so you should join! It’s pretty empty at the moment, but I will be accepting member requests now so we can fill it up! Feel free to post book recommendations, projects you are excitedly working on at the moment, geekery, etc… I just ask that you don’t spam or try to sell stuff on the Facebook page. Authors or other bloggers, feel free to post about new books, events, cover reveals, giveaways, etc…but keep it to one post per day.

I hope to see you there!

X is for X-Men

The infamous letter ‘X’. So we meet at last. Thank goodness I don’t have to use this letter often…I could’ve written about ‘Xylophones’, but I don’t play. I could’ve used it in another work like ‘eXcellent’ or ‘eXcel’…but really I like X-men a lot so it works out…for this year. To view other blogs writing eXcellent posts using the letter ‘X’, visit here.

The Good: I love the newer X-men movie a LOT. They are so freakin’ good. Like, “geek out but quietly so the kids don’t wake up” sort of movies. I can’t wait until the next one comes out.

These guys are awesome.

These guys are awesome.

Unfortunately, there is no trailer yet since the movie comes out next year (SOB), but here is a link to an article entitled “X-Men: Apocalypse, What we know so far“. Sigh. All I know is that I am excited for the cast and a continuation of the story. I haven’t read many of the comics, although I would like to!

The Bad: I used to watch the old cartoon back in the day and I am not sure if I could watch them again. Every single time I try to revisit something I loved in my childhood, it destroys the magic that surrounded said show, movie, or place. Maybe, once my kids are older I can go back and see the magic again through their eyes. I will say, I am a little sad that Gambit hasn’t been in the movies yet. He was my favorite character as a kid.

The Katy: X-men has always been a part of me. I remember wanting to have super powers as a kid and watching X-men is an awesome way to visit what having powers would be like. There are great things done with the characters’ powers, but also consequences.

Side note: I freakin’ love Quicksilver in Days of Future Past. So funny.  evan-peters-quicksilver-x-men-days-of-future-past

V is for Velociraptor

You can probably guess where this post is going from the title. Luke’s favorite movie/book is Jurassic Park, so you can probably assume that we are a little excited about Jurassic World. See other ‘V’ blogs in the challenge, here.

The Good: A new trailer for Jurassic World just came out this week. View it below. It features Chris Pratt and some Velociraptors. So awesome.

What else can I say? Chris Pratt says it all: “If we do this, we do it my way.”

chris

The Bad: I honestly cannot think of anything bad about Jurassic World coming out…um…maybe I’ll have to wake up early the morning after opening night because I have kids? That’s not your fault, you beautiful movie. Those toddlers just don’t know what’s good yet. Shhh….

The Katy: ::GEEKS OUT OVER TRAILER::

Ok, well, I am very excited for Jurassic World. I love Velociraptors the most because they are smart, sadistic, and terrifying. It is going to be awesome to see Chris Pratt leading a pack of them on a huge dinosaur hunt. I’m game. Here is a link to Luke’s tattoo of a Velociraptor. Love it. I hope this post was coherent enough, but if not just remember…

U is for Unicorns

We are getting to the difficult letters now! I decided to feature Unicorns for the letter ‘U’ or more specifically the show “My Little Pony.”  To see how other bloggers tackle this letter, visit the Blogging from A to Z Challenge website.Rarity-my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-20570179-570-402

The Good: Luke and I were introduced to this show on Netflix. There are only so many not annoying kids shows and movies on Netflix and we needed something fresh. We had heard good things about My Little Pony (first from a bartender at Applebee’s actually!) and decided to check it out. Ok….catchy songs…great animation…storylines I don’t hate…this show is actually really entertaining! Then we found the Brony documentaries on Netflix. They are ridiculous. And awesome. There are entire groups of adults that love this show.

The Bad: I feel bad liking a kids show so much. But I shouldn’t feel bad. Why is there so much stigma for adults liking cartoons? I love Adventure Time too and I don’t feel weird about that. Maybe I just need to OWN it, you know? Watch the documentaries mentioned above. They cover the stigma surrounding Bronies and such. Adults watching the show are not creepy child stalkers! Some, like me, discovered the show because they wanted something not crappy to watch with their kids. Others just wanted a good show to watch that had a positive vibe to it. My boys love it and it portrays great virtues for them to learn. Nothing wrong with that.

my_little_pony_vector___happy_twilight_sparkle_by_krusiu42-d5u8g1xThe Katy: While Luke and I don’t consider ourselves Bronies, we think it’s awesome that people can come together and hang out because of a kid’s show. When my kids are watching, I know I will be singing along to the songs. Plus, the main character (Twilight Sparkle) loves reading. I can relate to that!

S is for Star Wars

As a proper Star Wars geek, I knew I needed to cover the amazing space epic fandom for the letter ‘S’ of the A to Z Blogging Challenge.

The Good: What ISN’T good about Star Wars? Not only did the original trilogy create much of the technological advances needed to make special effects in movies, but the storyline and world are so imaginative…so awesome. But, you probably know this. You also probably know that a new movie is coming out this December. At first I was a little wary of a new Star Wars film, but I am quickly warming up to the idea. Especially after seeing the new trailer. OMG. I’m ready.

The Bad: It surprises me less and less each time, but I still run into people (almost weekly) who haven’t seen Star Wars.  I used to get mildly offended, but now I just change the subject. I am sure these sad sad individuals get harassed on a daily basis about their lack of culture and I don’t want to add to their embarrassment. Still…so sad.

sw

The Katy: A little bit about my love for Star Wars. It all started in 1st grade when I had a crush on a boy who loved Star Wars. In my first grade brain: “OH, if I like what he likes, he’ll like me!!!” That relationship never happened, but my love for Star Wars never died. And then I met my husband in college…his name is LUKE WALKER. It was meant to be, people!

My favorite character is Boba Fett. He is a bad ass bounty hunter who doesn’t need words to intimidate people. Mmmhmm. I have one Boba Fett tattoo already and am planning on another one soon. He is a great character. Sort of a Clint Eastwood type….in space.

bobaI could go on and on about Star Wars, but I won’t. I will say that I am SUPER excited for Christmastime.

H is for Hobbit

Today is the letter ‘H’ in the 2015 Blogging from A to Z Challenge! View more blogs here!

I decided to throw some Geek love out there and give a shout out to the littlest people in Middle Earth. Hobbits.

Mmm...Elevensies...

Mmm…Elevensies…

The Good: Hobbits are (mostly) kind hearted people whose lives celebrate the simple things. Food. Gardening. Smoking a pipe and blowing smoke rings. Parties. It seems like the perfect way to live! In fact, Hobbits eat many meals per day and still stay small! Ok, fairly round, but small. I know that if I ate that many large meals everyday than very soon I would be 300 lbs. I don’t see any Hobbits exercising either. I understand, Hobbits! However, certain families of Hobbits have a sense of adventure

Home Sweet Home after an epic journey

Home Sweet Home after an epic journey

tucked under their golden pocket watch chains that dangle from custom vest pockets. These Hobbits save the world over and over again and it’s amazing and awesome to hear about. Plus they live in adorable Hobbit holes. I want one. Maybe with a little higher ceilings so Luke doesn’t hit his head all of the time.

(Photo from FireAntTees shop on Etsy. I haven’t personally bought anything from her, but her stuff looks great!)

Gollum

What taters, precious?

The Bad: Some Hobbits get greedy and turn into this! Yuck. Golem is nasty and evil, yet you can’t help but pity him. He does have persistence to meet his goals…so that’s good, right? Gross. (Photo from Wikipedia)

The Katy: I love the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Yes, they are just walking for FOREVER. But there are epic battles, new friendships, and amazing adventures. I need to try to reread the books. Tolkein was a genius, but his books are hard for me to read. The writing style is like an entire 3 course meal that takes me forever to digest. I’ll get to it! But there are a lot of books on my TBR list that I need to check off before I return to Middle Earth. In the meantime, I can enjoy the movies. Being a LOTR/Hobbit fan is also an awesome way to bond with my mom, who also loves those things! We got to see the most recent Hobbit films in theaters together for some mom/daughter bonding. 🙂

Mmm…now if you’ll excuse me, I need to start prepping for second-breakfast and elevensies.

Zombie Hoard Attacks 42 Lounge or Halloween 2014

Halloween was amazing. My cousins (Nicole and Natalie) and I went to Milwaukee’s 42 Lounge, a geek club. We got ready at my apartment beforehand, which was fun too! Before they arrived (they live in Illinois) I started the process. I created a leg gash a few weeks before that I applied again to myself. I am so thankful that I saved the leg gash. It took me two hours to create, apply, and enhance with makeup the first time so I was able to save a lot of time this go around. After that, I applied my face piece I created a few weeks ago as well. I learned from my previous mistake of adding too much extra “flesh” around my mouth when I practiced applying the mouth gash the week before Halloween. It was too hard to talk, eat, and drink with that much face covered and it looked less real. As I was applying blood to my wounds, my cousins arrived already partially zombified. Nicole was a hippy zombie” complete with bell bottoms adorned with butterflies. Natalie was a business woman zombie with a ripped suit. We were an awesome hoard of zombies. They set to work bloodifying themselves with my arsenal of makeup and I applied a ghastly hand wound to each of us with liquid latex and kleenex. I should have taken “before” and “after” photos, but we really wanted to get to the club ASAP. This was my first halloween out since I had kids! I wanted as many hours among actual adults. I completed my costume with ripped jeans, moccasins, a ripped and burned plaid shirt, hipster glasses, and a t-shirt that read “I Liked Brains Before they Were Cool.” In retrospect I should’ve made the text a LOT bigger so people wouldn’t have to squint at my chest to read my shirt, but it is still a cool shirt. It was too dark to take photo at 42 lounge, but we saw some awesome geek costumes including several characters from “Adventure Time”, some steampunk people like a steampunk Scout Trooper complete with working switches and lever, and many other geek eye candy. I got many compliments for my makeup, which felt awesome. Someone even asked if we were going to start attacking people because we were so obviously infected. My friend Caitlin and her boyfriend, Eric joined us as pirates. (See us attacking her in one of the photos) We had a great time, even when the DJ switched from dance music to the theme song from Tetris. Oddest mix of all time.

Happy Halloween!
